Ghost Net Doll Digital Print Scarf

Artist: Alice Durilla
Materials: Digital Printed Silk Chiffon Scarf
Dimensions: 110 x 110cm

Through working with Darwin-based artist Anna Reynolds, the Warnindilyakwa artists have embraced digital design to create beautiful, one-of-a-kind textiles. They capture elements from their own artworks — inspired by their Country and Culture — and transform them using design software, resulting in original patterns that tell a story.

In 2021, this collaboration grew even further with the launch of an exclusive range of digitally printed scarves. Created on luxurious silks, these scarves carry the rich heritage, stories, and landscapes of the artists’ homelands, reshaped for a fresh, contemporary style.

Artist
Alice Durilla was born and grew up in Angurugu. When she was young she would watch her father paint. Alice's sister learnt to paint from her husband and her father.

Alice paints on canvas with acrylic and painted for a long time with her husband - the late Alfred Lalara. Together, they painted using traditional Groote Eylandt dash work in ochre and paint.

Alice is also a weaver, working with natural materials such as mangkurrkwa (pandanus) and natural dyes as well as recycled ghost nets and textiles. Alice creates contemporary fashion pieces and looks for the annual Anindilyakwa Arts fashion collection using a range of traditional knowledge in bush dyes and weavings as well as screen printed and digital printed designs.

Alice Durilla and her sister Stephanie are two of the few remaining dash painters on Eylandt.

"I like painting dash and line, both. I learned dash painting from my sister, Alice (Durilla), and line painting from my other sister in Baniyala. Alice and I are the only dash painters on Groote Eylandt now, in the old days more people used to paint dash but not any more. We were given permission for our painting by Tony Wurramaba’s father." - Stephanie Durilla
