Pandanus Earrings
Making earrings from mangkurrkwa (pandanus) is a slow process requiring skill and patience. The women go out on country to collect the leaves in the rainy season with a handmade wooden hook. Once they have enough mangkurrkwa the women remove the leaves are shredded into fine strips using a needle, dried in the sun and dyed using natural colours from roots, shrubs, leaves, and seeds that are also collected.
This traditional process, passed down through generations, transforms natural materials into beautifully crafted earrings, reflecting cultural heritage and deep ties to the environment.
Artist
Sharna Wurrumara, an Arts and Cultural Officer and key artist of the Angurugu community, is best known for her weaving - particularly her 'Sharna Hoops', brightly woven hoop earrings that are a guaranteed sell out at every art fair.
Guided by the knowledge passed down from her mother, aunties and grandmothers, Sharna creates mostly contemporary fibre work and wearble art. She is an experimental bush dyer and has significantly contributed to several art centre fashion lines. Over the years as an Arts and Cultural Officer, she has played a vital role in art fair sales and teaching and supporting fellow artists. Sharna is committed to keeping culture and community strong in her role at the art centre.
Shipping
On smaller items we offer $15 flat rate regular mail using Australia Post. Delivery times from Groote Eylandt to capital cities in Australia is approximately 10-14 days.
You can optionally request Express shipping for $20 flat rate. Express shipping is faster, usually 4-5 days to capital cities. Deliveries to regional towns or country addresses may take longer.
Postage on larger items is calculated depending on size, weight and destination. Our team works to ensure that all artworks are posted as soon as possible. Larger artworks will be barged to Darwin and freighted, meaning delivery times can be up to four weeks.
