Community Collaboration: Learning on Country

Umbakumba and Angurugu Art Centres | Groote Eylandt  

As of early 2022, the art centre was happy to welcome the Learning on Country (LoC) program back into our art centres. Starting with LoC Umbakumba and soon including LoC Angururgu, school children visited the art centre throughout the term to learn important cultural and artistic skills from our art and culture officers.  

Sharing skills of traditional and new ways art creation, students learnt how to harvest traditional materials on Country, prepare, strip and dry pandanus, basket weaving, ghost net sculpture weaving and bushy dyeing.
