Bartalumba Outstation | Groote Eylandt NT
Husband and wife duo, senior artists Elvis Bara and Stephanie Durilla, recently completed their commission for South 32/GEMCO.
Using traditional dash painting techniques, the artists created the below contemporary artworks as interpretations of South32’s values.
Ngarrumamurikajeyina (Care)
is a mother and baby dugong
Akwuwerringkambilya (Trust)
is Indigenous and non-indigenous trusting in each other
Ngarruwurrakwaruma (Togetherness)
is all working together as a team
Eningaba (Excellence)
Barnimbirra (Morning Star) brought daylight to the island and ever since then there has been day and night
Created as part of South32’s commitment to their Reconciliation Action Plan, it is hoped that these artworks will encourage wurramangkadirra (non-indigenous person) to take the time to learn more about what it means to be living and working on Anindilyakwa Land. This commission is the first of its kind between the art centre and South32; it represents a meaningful step towards fostering a deeper connection between South32 and warnumamalya (indigenous person).
