The Groote Eylandt ladies collect seeds from local bushes and trees. The Shiny Red Seed (disc shape seed) is from the Adenanthera Pavonina Tree commonly known as “The Red Bead Tree”. The seeds are poisonous, but are not usually dangerous because the hard seed coat prevents their digestion. The Thin Brown, (Apple type seed) is from the Coffee Bean Tree or commonly known as “The Coffee Bean Seed”. Collecting materials for artifacts is a time for families to be together for a range of other activities which include hunting, harvesting bush tucker and looking after country.
